Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does Palomar pulsed light work?

A: Palomar Systems use specialized handpieces which filter light from different parts of the spectrum.  Different treatments such as permanent hair reduction, sun spot removal or spider vein clearance require light of different wavelength bands.

Q: How is Palomar pulsed light different from a laser?

A: Pulsed light systems and lasers are very similar, but differ in significant areas.  Palomar Pulsed Light Systems use a much larger treatment window than most lasers. This spreads light over a wider area of skin and allows faster coverage of the skin and quicker treatments as a result (eg the underarms can be treated in 10 minutes or less).  A number of different cooling methods ensure skin comfort & safety, allowing for more comfortable and safer treatment than laser.  Pulses of light emitted by the handpiece are absorbed by the hair follicle where it is converted to heat which safely and permanently disables the cells responsible for new hair growth.

Q: What body areas can I get treated?

A: Any area except around the eyes. The upper lip, face, neck, underarms, bikini line, legs, arms, toes, fingers, chest and back can all be treated.

Q: What are Palomar treatments like?

A: Your treatment provider will move the handpiece over your skin, pulsing it all the while.  Each pulse will send a beam of light through your skin.  A flashing light, an audible tone and a mild sensation on the skin will tell you when the handpiece is being pulsed.

Q: What should I expect after treatment?

A: Immediately after treatment, you can expect a mild suburn-like sensation, possibly accompanied by some minor redness and/or swelling. This may last 2-24 hours and can be soothed with cold aloe vera gel or ice packs.  Sun avoidance is important, as is the avoidance of irritating products.  See Post-Treatment Instructions (this is a link to Post-Treatment Instructions above).
There will be an appearance of continued, or even increased hair growth after the initial treatments.  This is not new hair growth, but the treated hairs being expelled from the skin.
At any given time, some of your hair is not in the phase of active growth (the anagen phase). Therefore you will need more than one treatment to affect the growth of all your unwanted hair.
Typically, several treatments (an average of 6 - 8, - depending on skin type, gender, medical history, current medications) will be necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction.

Advantages of the Palomar IPL device

The demand for intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal and laser hair removal treatments are at an all-time high. This is not surprising, considering that traditional hair removal via electrolysis and waxing is painful, tedious, time-consuming and cumulatively very expensive.  Light-based hair removal permanently reduces unwanted facial and body hair, in fewer treatments and with more comfort than is possible with traditional procedures.

In the 1990s, Palomar® pioneered permanent hair reduction after receiving the first FDA clearance for this procedure.  Since then, Palomar lasers have been the industry standard that all others have been compared to, and validated by Palomar's strong patent position.  Lasers, although clinically effective, have skin limitations regarding skin color, hair color and hair thickness.  Subsequent new technology developments from Palomar led to new, groundbreaking pulsed light technology that improved clinical outcomes over a broader client base.

Our IPL technology delivers specific wavelengths, with large spot sizes, superior contact cooling and smooth pulse technology for clients of all skin types, hair colors and finer hair.  Palomar's pioneering, patented technologies have established the StarLux platform for hair removal treatments as the most versatile, effective device available.
We put our industry-leading research and development efforts behind the perfection of the procedure. Palomar's pulsed light handpieces are clinically proven to produce results as good as or better than those of gold-standard lasers in removing unwanted hair from all areas of the body including the face, back, chest, leg, bikini line and underarm areas - with greater comfort and less down time.

Our IPL hair removal equipment makes it easy to offer hair removal treatments for any skin type - including dark skin - in comfortable, cost-effective treatments with minimal risk and downtime.
